A unfairly forgotten artist

I was talking to my daughter the other day and we realised that we had separately discovered the work of the same artist by accident. His name is John Atkinson Grimshaw and he painted in the 19th century. He painted atmospheric cityscapes like the one above of the Broomilaw in Glasgow. He also painted treelined winter lanes, harbours, landscapes and some portraits. He also did some paintings of naked or semi naked women  looking like fairies. The latter is as much a reflection of the time he painted as his cityscapes because the Victorians did like pictures of fairies and the likes but they are not usually done in such an adult fashion.

Its well worth looking at his paintings and there are a good selection at the Athenaeum and there is also an article in the Wikipedia about him.
